The Script Supervisor

Categories

On Set, Script

The Script Supervisor acts as the Editor's representative on set.

This is a very important role.

The Script Supervisor is in charge of the Shooting Record. They are noting everything that is shot. The Script Supervisor's notes are given to the Editor before they start the edit.

The Script Supervisor notes the following:

  • Which shots are being filmed - by shot number, shot type, and action - for which scenes, and which takes. They have one line on the Shooting Record per take.

  • Camera information: e.g. lens, frame rate, ISO, f/stop, ND*

  • Any issues with the board: tail stale, AFS, missed board, second sticks

  • Which take was the preferred take from the Director ("G" or Good takes). Also any takes that are "NG" (no good) from the Director, DP, and Sound, with a note why they are no good.

  • The timed duration of each take, from action to cut

  • Continuity: such as which hand an actor used, which side something was on, where items were placed.

Don't worry if you don't know how to do all this - we will show you.

The Script Supervisor has the script in front of them. They, with the Director and AD, make sure that the entire scene has been covered, and they note any changes to the script made on the day.

The Script Supervisor is in front of the monitor throughout the shoot. They focus on what is in the frame but also in the room.

Key skills include attention to detail, listening, and communication.

On the AOTS shoot, we provide Shooting Records for the Script Supervisor. They will need copies of the script, a stopwatch, and a way to take photos (usually a phone).
