The Production Manager

Categories

Production, On Set

The Production Manager is the second-in-charge to the Producer.

Within the Production team, the basic hierarchy is:

  1. Producer

  2. Production Manager

  3. Production Coordinator(s)

  4. Production Assistant(s)

On a larger shoot, the Production Manager (otherwise known as the Unit Production Manager or UPM) manages invoices and receipts from the production. They supervise and delegate tasks to the Production Coordinator(s). Organisation and communication are key skills.

The Production Manager may manage the back-end of the set at times while the Producer is involved with the shoot. For instance, if the Producer is watching the monitor (video village) or managing an issue, the Production Manager is sorting things in the background.
