Gaffer

The Gaffer is the head of the Lighting Department.

The Lighting Department works under the Director of Photography.

As such, the Gaffer is an HOD (Head of Department) but they also report to the DP.

The Gaffer must understand lighting: the lights themselves, the stands, diffusion and gels. They need to understand electrical wattage (to make sure the location doesn't overload or blow a fuse) and health and safety. They often have to carry heavy equipment.

The Gaffer can be assisted by a LX Tech (Lighting Technician).

In our AOTS projects, we may have a Gaffer, but we often have Camera and Lighting Assistants. They assist the DP to light the scene.

If you are working in lights, it is a good idea to invest in some heat-proof gloves.
