Editor
The Key Storyteller in Post Production
Categories
Post Production, HOD, Editing
A film is made three times: when it is written, when it is shot, and when it is edited
The Editor is a storyteller. They are a creative voice in the post production process.
The Editor assembles and refines the footage into its final form. They have the first edit of the film - so they are the first to see it from beginning to end.
Once the Editor has the first Rough Cut, they work with the Director to refine the cuts until the Director has signed off their cut.
Once the Director has their cut, the Producer will input to refine the cut until it is approved. When no further changes are being made to the cut, we have Picture Lock.
One we have Picture Lock, the film can then go to the Composer, Colourist, Sound Editor, and have its Titles, Credits, and any VFX added.
The Editor will assemble all of these elements into the final version of the film, and will export the film.
Editors must have a strong understanding of story and narrative structure. As well as the technical skills of being able to edit in an editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere, DaVinci), they must be excellent communicators and know how to manage creatives. They use the information from the DIT and Script Supervisor on set. The Editor works closely with the Director and the Producer. They work with other members of the Post Production team: the Sound Designer, Colourist, Composer, VFX Artist(s), GFX Artist(s). They do the final exports -- with a clear naming convention that doesn't include FINAL final final FINAL . mov
