DIT
The Digital Imaging Technician, or Data Wrangler

The DIT is part of the Camera Department. Their role is to ingest the footage as we film.
They can also act as the Assistant Editor, by starting the assembly and synching audio and video. Sometimes the Editor fulfils the DIT role on set, so they can start the edit. The benefit of that is that the Editor can point out any shots we are missing that will help them in the edit - shots we can get while we're filming.
The DIT (or Data Wrangler) will need a computer with suitable software to ingest the footage onto multiple external hard drives.
They may be able to create proxies while on set (time dependent), and will need suitable software for that.
When the footage is copied, it is always copied onto at least two external hard drives. One copy goes to the Editor, and one to the Producer (and sometimes one to the Director). As long as there are at least two back-ups, going in different directions.
Once the DIT has copied the footage to the two hard drives (separately - not copying from one to the other), they return the camera card to the AC, and will indicate whether the card is "okay to format". We can't run the risk of the card being formatted before the files have come off!
The DIT will understand post production processes. They will have a strong attention to detail.
