Director

The Key Creative

The Director is the key creative vision for the film. We all work to their concept of the story and visuals.

The Director is involved in development, preproduction, production, and post production.

Their key role on set is to work with the Actors to get the best performance. For this reason, the Director needs to know how to work with actors, including rehearsal techniques and direction tools (such as suggestion, active verbs, character motivation).

In addition to the actors, the Director works with...

  • the Writer on the script, to include visual elements and develop the story;

  • the Producer, to ensure the film can be made within the timeframe and to budget;

  • the DP and Production Designer on the look of the film;

  • the Production Designer or Art Director and the HMUA on the character look and feel (costume, hair, makeup, props, set design);

  • the DP and 1st AD on the shot list and shooting schedule;

  • the Editor on the cut;

  • the Sound Recordist, Sound Designer, and Composer on the Soundtrack;

  • the Graphics Artist on the graphics;

  • the Colourist on the film's colour look;

There is a lot the Director is in charge of. The director doesn't need to know everything technical to make a film. The main thing is having experienced people around them, with whom they can communicate and share their vision.

Key skills: communication; collaboration; leadership; visual storytelling; narrative storytelling; working with actors; time management;

With the Action On The Side Weekend Filmmaking project, we have a pitch process, where prospective directors share their vision for the film.
